Windows 8.1 update due in spring with concessions to mouse and keyboard users

BARCELONA—At a Sunday press event prior to Mobile World Congress, Microsoft vice president Joe Belfiore led with bright news about Windows 8: Microsoft has sold 200 million licenses (more than all of OS X’s user base, he noted); users have downloaded 4 million apps from the Windows Store; and 40 percent of Windows 8 machines are touch-enabled.

But for the 60 percent of Windows 8 machines still not touch-enabled, Belfiore conceded, users’ “satisfaction level is lower.” So when the Microsoft executive confirmed rumors of a Windows 8.1 update this spring, he also detailed three major improvements that would come with it. First and foremost will be features to give mouse-and-keyboard diehards a break.

Specific user interface changes will include what Belfiore called “discoverable Search, Power, and Settings,” meaning these three features would be visible on the Start screen. There will also be a new mouse UI for right-clicking to start and close apps, and you’ll be able to launch and switch apps from the taskbar.

Belfiore, right, is Microsoft's corporate vice president and manager for Windows Phone Program Management.

Belfiore also made a pointed reference to the rumors that Microsoft might dial back some of Windows 8’s more finger-friendly aspects. “We love touch,” he proclaimed, and “we have no intent to degrade the touch experience.” But he clearly wanted to placate legacy mouse-and-keyboard users: “Our measure is, Did we make things better for people without touchscreens?”

Windows 8 is also being re-tuned to allow for somewhat more lenient hardware specs—and therefore, lower prices for end users. Belfiore said hardware partners would be able to build machines with 1GB of RAM and 16GB of hardware storage. While Belfiore didn’t provide any detail about actual products, those baseline specs would seem to provide room for lower-cost Windows tablets.

“This is work we have in progress now,” Belfiore said in closing, offering no further details. However, in the Q&A that followed, he emphasized that Windows RT very firmly remained part of Microsoft’s picture.

Belfiore’s statements were echoed in a blog post that also appeared this morning.

64-bit smartphones are coming, but Apple's iPhone 5s still stands alone

iPhone 5s monolithsobile World Congress this week, Apple’s iPhone 5s remains the only 64-bit handset available. But with new chips announced at the show and 64-bit Android now ready, competitive handsets are only a few months away.

After months of careful preparation, Intel announced its dual-core Atom chip code-named Merrifield, a 64-bit chip that it says will come out in handsets during the second quarter. Not many device makers sell smartphones with Intel chips, and it remains unclear who will sell Intel-based 64-bit smartphones. But Intel has signed multi-year product deals with Asus, Lenovo and Foxconn, who will sell x86-based products including mobile devices.

Intel showed off handsets running its next-generation Merrifield smartphone processors.

Closer competition to Apple will come from Qualcomm, whose new Snapdragon 615 eight-core and 610 quad-core chips will be in handsets by the fourth quarter. The new Snapdragon chips are similar to Apple’s A7 64-bit chips, with CPUs based on ARM’s 64-bit ARMv8 architecture. The Snapdragon 615 could be overkill for smartphones, but it does stand out, with features such as an integrated LTE modem, a video decoder for H.265 4K video, and 802.11ac Wi-Fi technology.

MediaTek, which typically supplies chips for lower-priced handsets, announced its own 64-bit chip for affordable high-end smartphones. The eight-core MT6752 has integrated LTE, 1080p video capabilities, 16-megapixel camera support and other features. Mediatek’s chip will become commercially available in the third quarter, though the company did not say when smartphones with its chips would appear.

galaxy s5 mwc

One disappointment at MWC was Samsung, which announced the highly anticipated Galaxy S5 smartphone with 32-bit chips. The S5 was supposed to be Samsung’s answer to the iPhone 5s, but it will launch initially with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 801 and Samsung’s new Exynos 5 Octa 5422 eight-core chip, which is based on ARM’s older Cortex-A15 and A7 cores.

Nvidia said in January that its first 64-bit ARM chip, called Tegra K1, would be in smartphones and tablets by the second half of this year.

Apple setting the pace

After the iPhone 5s launched, industry observers questioned the benefits of putting 64-bit chips in smartphones. But smartphone makers are moving ahead, and none wants to be seen as lagging behind Apple, said Jack Gold, principal analyst at J. Gold Associates.

“I don’t think device makers are desperate, but they need to be on a par with Apple at least from a marketing perspective,” Gold said. “Being able to say they have 64 bit is important, at least at the high end of devices.”

Handsets could take nine months to a year to reach the market after a chip is announced, said Ian Ferguson, vice president of segment marketing at ARM.

When they arrive, the 64-bit chips will bring new features to smartphones and some applications will benefit, Ferguson said.

fingerprint

64-bit chips will help enable better fingerprint sensors, analysts say.

Performance improvements will be manifest in gaming applications, fingerprint sensing, facial recognition and speech interaction, Ferguson said. The algorithms related to those tasks can take advantage of 64-bit processing. Using 64-bit chips also allows for more than 4GB of memory, though smartphones don’t have that level of memory yet, Ferguson said. There won’t be a big difference in battery life for 64-bit smartphones compared with handsets today, he said.

The adoption of 64-bit also depends on having operating systems and applications available, analyst Gold said.

“64-bit is a game of chicken and egg, much like it was in the PC space. Do you come out with 64-bit chips first and then upgrade OS and apps to 64-bit, or the other way around?”

For MWC, Intel readied both its 64-bit smartphone processors and an OS to go along with it. The company for the first time showed a 64-bit version of Android running on smartphones during an on-stage demonstration of a Merrifield handset at MWC.

Google leads the development of Android and works with partners and the open-source community to optimize the OS for chips and handsets. But Intel took on a lot of the work on drivers and chipset support for 64-bit Android, putting in extra work since September to get ahead of its rivals.

Intel sees support for 64-bit Android on its x86 chip as an advantage over its competitors in the ARM camp, who are still waiting for a true 64-bit version. Qualcomm, Mediatek and other chip makers did not address support for 64-bit Android during their chip announcements. A Google spokesman declined to comment on 64-bit for Android.

The 64-bit ARM-based handsets that come out in the coming months may run a 32-bit version of Android, ARM’s Ferguson said. The ARM architecture has backward support for 32-bit applications.

Samsung Galaxy S5 Breaks Records With Over 100K Pre-Registrations At T-Mobile In Under Two Days

T-Mobile CMO Mike Sievert is pumped about Samsung’s new Galaxy S5 smartphone: Today, the executive tweeted that Samsung’s latest flagship is a record-breaker at the carrier, with over 100,000 pre-registrations in under 48 hours since its announcement.

Pre-registrations are notably not pre-sales – they represent just consumer interest in an upcoming device, not a commitment to buy. Still, Sievert says that this indicates the launch of Samsung’s upcoming phone will “be big,” according to another tweet.

How to Re-Download OS X Mountain Lion Installer from OS X Mavericks

Downloading older version of OS X from the Mac App Store

Though it is generally recommended for users to keep their Macs up to date with the latest system software, not everyone wants to run OS X Mavericks on all of their Macs, and in some situations older Macs may not support the latest version of OS X anyway. Additionally, there are circumstances where users looking to update from Snow Leopard or OS X Lion may want to go to OS X Mountain Lion instead of Mavericks for compatibility reasons, or to avoid some of the potential issues discussed here by readers with Mail app and iCloud syncing that have frustrated some using current versions of 10.9.1 (those are since resolved with 10.9.2, update to avoid those issues). With OS X Mountain Lion officially off the App Store though, you can’t just search for it and choose to re-download, but that doesn’t necessarily mean users can’t retrieve the installer again.

Important Note: This is really a trick aimed at advanced users who know why they want an older version of OS X. Using the downloaded installer will not work to revert from a Mac with Mavericks to Mountain Lion. Users who wish to downgrade from OS X Mavericks to Mountain Lion should follow these instructions instead, but be aware that it requires a backup from the prior OS X version. If you’re experiencing unusual problems with Mavericks, you may want to try a clean install. Finally, do not attempt to install OS X Mountain Lion on a newer Mac that shipped with OS X Mavericks pre-installed, the installation of 10.8 will fail because it does not support the newest hardware while 10.9 does.

To be able to get the older version of OS X from the Mac App Store again, you must have obtained OS X Mountain Lion from the App Store at some point in time, thus tying it to your Apple ID and Mac App Store account. This works even if it was originally on another Mac than what is currently in use. If you did not buy, download, or install Mountain Lion from the App Store with an Apple ID, this will not work.

  1. Open the App Store application as usual, from /Applications/
  2. Go to the “Purchases” tab
  3. Scroll through the list until you find “OS X Mountain Lion” – do not use the Search box because it will try and fail by looking within the wider Mac App Store
  4. Click on the grey “DOWNLOAD” button
  5. You will find a message saying “Would you like to continue? OS X 10.9 is already installed on this computer. Are you sure you want to download OS X 10.8?” – click ‘Continue’
  6. Confirm download of older version of OS X

  7. Wait for the full download to complete (it’s about 5GB) and find the “Install OS X Mountain Lion” application in the /Applications/ directory

older version of Mountain Lion downloading in OS X Mavericks

Now that you have the installer handy, you can create a boot installer for Mountain Lion if you want to perform a clean installation of 10.8 on another compatible Mac.

As mentioned before, we generally recommend keeping up to date with the latest version of OS X supported by a Mac, which for most machines is OS X Mavericks. You can build a USB installer for Mavericks

Technically, you can also re-download the OS X Lion installer this way too, though it would be hard to imagine a scenario where a user would want Lion over OS X Mountain Lion, let alone OS X Mavericks.

Android Finally Arrives on Nokia with the Nokia X, X+ and XL

“It’s familiar but oddly very different” reads the headlines on one of the leading tech blogs after Nokia unveiled what was the worst kept secret perhaps in the recent tech history. Yes, Nokia finally unveiled three devices all of which run a forked or custom Android on it. While the world had expected just one Android device, dare we say Nokia tripled the joy of it’s fans by announcing three phones in the Nokia X family which run AOSP.

Nokia X

The devices will focus on the emerging markets which reflects in it’s specs. The Nokia X will go on sale immediately, while the Nokia X+ and Nokia XL will be available in Q2. The Nokia X phones are in a way a hybrid of Asha, Lumia and Symbian devices. Stephen Elop also categorically mentioned that these devices will always be priced one category lower than the Lumia devices. Unlike any other Android phone, the Nokia X series does not come with Google Play Store though it runs Android apps. There are other stores such as proprietary Nokia Store, Yandex or even Amazon appstore for you to pick your favorite Android apps from.

The Nokia X will retail for 89 Euros, the Nokia X+ will cost you 99 Euros while the Nokia XL will hit your wallet by 109 Euros

Nokia X1

The first phone in the family is the Nokia X which has a 4 inch display with WVGA resolution. It runs a heavily customised Android version 4.1. There is 512 MB RAM on board and 4 GB ROM though, expansion via Micro SD is possible. The device has a fixed focus 3 MP rear camera and no front facing camera. The phone will come with services such as OneDrive, Skype etc in built and also brings Fast lane, a quick way to view your notifications and apps from the Asha device.

If you haven’t check out our views on the Nokia X, you can read them here

The other two phones announced were the Nokia X+ and the Nokia XL which are basically small upgrades on the Nokia X. The Nokia X+ is the same device as the Nokia X but with 768 MB RAM and comes with a bundled 4 GB Micro SD card. The Nokia XL on the other hand is a slightly bigger device with a 5 inch display and a 5 MP rear camera and a front facing camera too. The device is powered by a 2000 mAh battery. The UI of the phone, at least on videos looked pretty slick and heavily inspired from the Lumia line. You have similar tile like experience and there is no particular app drawer.

All the three devices are dual SIM supported and have 3G connectivity while using Micro SIMs.

A Galaxy S5 or 5S ? Samsung Introduces Fingerprint Scanner as it unveils the all new Samsung Galaxy S V

It was the most anticipated, hyped and talked about press event at the MWC 2014. Samsung took the stage in Barcelona to announce it’s latest flagship device, the Galaxy S V in a very typical dramatic Samsung fashion. After what was a not so successful launch of the Galaxy S IV, Samsung learnt its lesson well and there were no radio plays involved at least, though yes, there was plenty of orchestra. It was closer to what you would expect from a tech launch. So, let’s quickly dive into what the latest and greatest Galaxy device has brought to the shelf for 2014.

The Design is distinctively Different

Galaxy S V1

The first noticeably difference between the Samsung Galaxy S V and rest of the Galaxy family is the design aesthetics of the back of the device. The front and the side metal trims remain the same though. Gone are the plastics, and gone are the stitched faux leather backs and have been replaced by a pseudo metal like but still plastic back with dimples. The device is a water and dust resistant too with IP67 rating. Taking cues from the hugely popular Touch ID on the iPhone 5s, Samsung has, as expected, bought a fingerprint scanner to the Samsung Galaxy S V. It is weird how Samsung has decided to implement this as you have to basically swipe your finger across to log into the device.

The device has a slightly larger display at 5.1 inches which is a 1080P display with Super AMOLED panel. Just beneath the home button, there are two capacitive buttons, a menu button and back button. There is USB 3.0 on board, just like the Note III.

The Specifications as expected are bumped

Galaxy S V

Any flagship device is expected to bring the latest and greatest specifications. And the Galaxy S V is no different. The device features a 16 MP rear camera with the capability to shoot 4K videos. The device has an LED flash as well as a heart rate sensor on the back where if you place your finger for about 5-6 seconds, the device will record and give information about your heart beat.

Internally, the device runs a 2.5 GHz Quad Core SoC which makes the device last at least 20% longer thanks to better battery management. There is 2 GB RAM on board to keep the experience lag free. The device comes with 2800 mAh removable battery.

The Software feels familiar but with useful add ons

Galaxy S V2

The Samsung Galaxy S V runs Android 4.4.2 KitKat. The Touchwiz skin looks very similar to what we have seen on the previous devices such as the Galaxy S IV and Note III. The major difference is in the notification drop down menu, where icons are changed to more rounded ones. There is also a health tracker which is widely improved from the last time. The device brings a dedicated fitness coach to help you stay fit by calculating the number of steps you have taken, calories burnt etc. There is also a new unlocking effect which is based on prism effect of diamonds.

The device also brings a magazine UI when swiping from left to right when on the home screen. This is basically a collection of all your news and social feeds which we had seen on the Note III by swiping up from Home Screen. Samsung also claimed that the device is the fastest AF Camera in the world at .3 sec. The device also has HDR mode for video, which is another first. The Galaxy S V also comes with Ultra Power Saver mode which turns the display of your device to black and white keeping only essentials like SMS and Call there making sure your device lives longer.

Availability, price and your options

The Samsung Galaxy S V is expected to go on sale starting April 11 in 150 countries. Samsung confirmed that they will be supporting designer backs and several newer colors will be made available in due course. To start with though, in the US at least, the phone will be available in the shimmery white and charcoal black color. The device will come with both 16 and 32 GB variant and both of them will have Micro SD card expansion. There was no official word on the pricing, though we will update you when that happens.

FreeFixer Removes Unwanted Programs from Your PC

FreeFixer Removes Unwanted Programs from Your PCExpand

Windows: Over time, your Windows PC will have accumulated a whole bunch of unwanted programs, services and other things that slow it down. FreeFixer sorts and lists everything on your hard drive and offers more information about each to help decide whether it's needed.

Once FreeFixer runs a full scan, it will give you a long list of items like registry startups, scheduled tasks, processes, services, namespace service provides, SVCHost and Explorer modules, Firefox extensions and searh engines, and more. Each item comes with an icon, full file path, and a "more info" link to find out further details about that item. After randomly clicking 15 of them, I'm satisfied with the information FreeFixer is able to give about the items.

To safeguard you from deleting things you shouldn't, FreeFixer does not list critical system files. It further marks files from trusted software publishers (like Apple, Trend Micro, Microsoft, etc.) as "trusted files" in green. These too can't be deleted and they won't appear when you generate a log file. The advantage of this is that when you publish a log file on a forum to identify a problem, it's easier for those helping you.

Samsung tries again with Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo smartwatches

Samsung Smartwatches The Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo smartwatches offer better battery life than Samsung's first smartwatch

Samsung has shown off the Gear 2, its second attempt at releasing a smartwatch that has mass appeal with consumers.

The company demonstrated the device along side another new model, the lighter Gear 2 Neo.

Both have a heart rate sensor, a pedometer and various tools to measure exercise, sleep and stress levels.

The watches run on Tizen OS, a fledgling mobile operating system, rather than Google's Android software.

The move is being seen as part of a wider strategy from Samsung to move away from Google's platform and to lessen its reliance on the search giant's product.

Crucial to Tizen's longer-term success will be whether it can attract the same breadth and quality of apps compared to Apple's App Store and Google Play.

Currently there are offerings from the likes of CNN, Ebay, Evernote and Paypal available on Tizen, as well as some slightly clunky but nonetheless functional workarounds that allow Android apps to run on the platform.

Enhancements
Samsung Gear 2 The Gear 2 has fitness tracking built in

At Barcelona's Mobile World Congress on Monday night, Samsung is expected to launch the latest iteration of its flagship smartphone range, presumably to be called the Galaxy S5.

The current model, the S4, has proved to be a hugely popular product for the South Korean firm, and is widely considered the only real rival to Apple's iPhone.

The Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo smartwatches are companion devices to the Galaxy smartphones, although last year's model was poorly received by both critics and consumers.

Samsung will hope a number of enhancements will turn things around.

Firstly, the battery life of the new devices is considerably better. Samsung promises two to three days of power - much more than the charge-every-night issue suffered by the company's first effort.

The Gear 2's camera is now situated on the main body of the device, taking it away from the strap and removing some of the rigid bulk of the Galaxy Gear.

The Gear 2 Neo does not have a camera, but is 13g lighter as a result.

Samsung has heralded both devices as offering "freedom and style" - but despite bringing in extra design expertise, the watch still looks very much a technology product, rather than a fashion accessory.

5 Things You Should Do With A New Android Phone

etting started with a new smartphone is always an adventure. You’ll want to familiarize yourself with its capabilities and make the most of it. Small features can make all the difference in day-to-day use and cool apps will tailor the device to your needs.

Maybe this is your first Android phone, or maybe you’ve already gone through half a dozen. Regardless, there are many things that need doing when you first start putting your new phone to use.

1. Familiarize Yourself With The Basic Features

If this is your first Android phone (or maybe even your first smartphone of any kind), you should start with the basics. Before you look at more specific features, you should familiarise yourself with the Android interface and its basic features.

muo android new problems phone 5 Things You Should Do With A New Android Phone

A good place to start is Christian Cawley’s article for new Android users. Or take a look at The Complete Android Guide for Everyone. You’ll learn what’s what and where it’s at; how to place a call and take a picture. Import your contacts and synchronize them with your Google account. Play around with these basic features until you get a feel for them. Don’t worry, you’ll be up and running in no time.

2. Install Widgets To Your Home Screens

Widgets are a topic not every Android user agrees on. You either hate them or love them. Personally, I think widgets are one of the biggest advantage of the Android over the iOS home screen. Instead of just populating your home screen with an icon for your weather app, you can add an area showing the weather forecast right there.

To install a widget, long-press your home screen or (depending on the app launcher installed on your phone) try going through the app drawer.

You don’t have to go far to find interesting widgets. Some of the default Android apps come with widgets, and some of the apps you installed later on probably do too. In particular, take a look at the Clock, Google Search, Calendar and Music widgets. Perhaps the simplest widget is the contact tile, where you can add a button to your homescreen for a single contact, so you can instantly reach out to your significant other, family member or friend.

3. Automatically Update Your Apps

As the apps start mounting on your phone, so does the work to manage them. Take a break and have your phone automatically update your apps to always have the latest and greatest features and compatibility, as well as any security patches.

auto update apps 5 Things You Should Do With A New Android Phone

Open the Play Store and press the menu button on your phone to get additional options for the app. Go to Settings > Auto-update apps. Here you’ll find three options. Either do not auto-update apps (which leaves you to manage everything manually), auto-update apps at any time, or auto-update apps over Wi-Fi.

The middle option should be used with caution, as your phone will also download apps when you’re on a 3G network. If you don’t watch out, you could incur a lot of extra costs from your provider. The last option is the prudent one as it will only update the apps when you’re connected to a Wi-Fi network.

4. Upload Your Photos To The Cloud

If you use your phone as a camera, it becomes more than just a shiny piece of hardware. It’s filled with memories. It’s easy to underestimate just how ephemeral this collection is. If you don’t make back-ups, all of those memories can disappear in a flash. Drop your phone or leave it in a cab and… all gone.

DropBox Android 1 5 Things You Should Do With A New Android Phone

Upload your photos to the cloud to keep them safe. Even if you lose your phone tomorrow, you’ll keep your photos and your memories. Dropbox will do just that. It’ll upload your photos when you’re connected to a Wi-Fi network and you can sleep easy. Google+, Flickr and SkyDrive are also able to back up your photos. For a more information check out these 5 tools to auto-upload images from your Android phone.

5. Receive and Send Texts On Your Computer

A phone is plenty useful when you’re on the road, but when you’re at home a regular sized keyboard is much more practical to work with. More so, when you’re behind your computer at home, you might miss messages sent to your phone. All of this becomes much easier if you keep your texts synced between your computer and your smartphone. Text messages sent to your phone will pop up on your computer and you can answer then and there.

There are more than a few apps that offer this functionality. Read Danny Stieben’s preferred 3 ways to manage texts on your computer, or my older round-up of three applications that let you manage your texts in your browser. Another app that deserves to be mentioned is Krome, because it not only syncs your texts, but all Android notifications to your computer.

How Easy Is It To Sync Google Mail, Contacts & Calendar To Your iPad?

iOS offers excellent support for Google accounts, so you can easily add your Google account and your email, contacts, and calendars will automatically sync with your iPad.

Your Google account data will be accessible on your iPad’s built-in apps, although Google also offers their own dedicated Gmail app. Here’s what you need to know.

Add Your Google Account

All you really need to do is add your Google account in your iPad’s Settings app. To get started, open the Settings app from your iPad’s home screen. Scroll down in the left pane and tap the Mail, Contacts, and Calendar category, then tap the Add Account option under Accounts.

Tap the Google logo to add a Google account.

You’ll be prompted to enter a name, email, password, and description for your account. The email address and password are essential for logging into your account, while the name you enter here will be shown as your name when you send emails from this account on your iPad.

The description field is for your own purposes, so give the account a suitable description. If you have a personal Google account and one for work, you could separate them by labeling them “Personal Account” and “Work Account”.

If you have two-step verification enabled to secure your Google account, you’ll need to create an application-specific password for your iPad rather than entering your Google account password. Click this link to access the Application-specific passwords page if you need to create an application-specific password. Enter a name like “Gmail on my iPad” on the page, click Generate Password, and type the password shown on the screen into the password field on your iPad.

Once you’re signed in, you’ll then be able to choose the type of data you want to sync. If you’ve already set up an account, you can view these settings by tapping the name of the account on the Mail, Contacts, Calendars screen in the Settings app. You’ll probably want to sync all types of Google account data, but you can disable certain things if you prefer.

Your iPad uses two-way sync for chosen data. Mail, contacts, and calendar events will be synced both ways, so changes you make on the iPad will be synced to your Google account and any changes you make on the web or on other devices will be synced back to your iPad. This all happens automatically, so you don’t have to think about it.

If you choose to sync Notes, notes from the Notes app on your iPad will appear in your Gmail account under a label named Notes.

Access Your Synced Data

Your Gmail is accessible in the Mail app, which is the iPad’s built-in email client. The Mail app uses the IMAP protocol, so you have access to all of your email. Thanks to the nature of IMAP, any changes you make will also be synced – so if you read an email on your iPad, it will be marked as read on your Gmail account. Using it is simple; it’s just another email client.

The difference is in the way Gmail handles requests – and whether to archive or trash by default. You can make your own personal choices under the account’s Advanced settings from the Mail, Contacts & Calendar menu. You can choose to move discarded messages to trash or archive.

Contacts auto-complete as you type them into the appropriate field. This also makes your Google contacts available in other iPad apps that request access to your contacts. iOS 7 offers two-way syncing with Gmail contacts, so any new contacts you create on your iPad can be synced to your Google Contacts.

The Calendar app displays events from your Google Calendar. These upcoming calendar events will also appear in the notification center, which you can access by swiping down from the top of your iPad’s screen. Events you add on your iPad should also by synced to your Google Calendar account.

The Gmail App

If you don’t like the Mail app included with your iPad, you can choose to install Google’s Gmail app instead. The Gmail app provides an interface to your Gmail account provided by Google, so they can integrate more of Gmail’s features. The biggest advantage to using the Gmail app will be seen by those who rely on the service’s labels.

gmail app on ipad How Easy Is It To Sync Google Mail, Contacts & Calendar To Your iPad?

You’ll still want to add your Google account to your iPad, even if you do this.  Google doesn’t provide an official Google Calendar app, so you’ll have to view your calendar events in the Calendar app included with your iPad. Syncing your contacts with your Google account also ensures your contacts will be available in all your iPad apps. You can also install unofficial third-party calendar apps like Sunrise Calendar that will display your Google Calendar events.

Do you prefer another app for accessing Gmail, Google Calendar, or your contacts on your iPad? Leave a comment and share any other apps you prefer!
